The manual says about 2.5 qts. I put that in mine and it just touched the bottom of the dip stick. Even hot, it took almost another 1/2 qt.

Same here. 2.5 qts barely wet the dipstick.

I've owned other bikes that when I poured in the prescribed amount of oil, it would show as overfull, and after the bike was started and ran, it would drop back to normal (presumably due to the filter filling with oil even though I always added a bit to it).

I've never owned a dry sump engine before.

Same here, Service Manual states 2.5 qts. But I usually just put in 3 qts. so it is midway on the dipstick.

2.5 quarts is probably to the bottom line on the dipstick.

On mine 2.5 barely touches the dipstick. It took 3qts to get just below the full line (hot).
I think I read somewhere the extended swingarm gives the Uly more oil capacity. Looks like the manual has not caught up.

Same here. OM actually says 2.5 qt including the 4 oz poured into the filter. Mine took more than 2.5 qt just to wet the tip of the stick plus the 4 oz in the filter. I ended up just shy of 3 qts to reach the midway point.

Since I have an XB12Ss with the same swingarm, I'll add my two cents. I changed the oil at about 300 miles & 2.5 Quarts just wasn't enough. I had to add a little less than 3.

I just got the bike back from the 1000 mile service & it was overfilled. The oil level was almost to the top of the dipstick. I sucked a few ounces out with a mightyvac & it is just above the full mark. I bet they just dumped 3 quarts in at the dealer. 3 is too much, but it certainly holds more than 2.5.

Mine was slightly overfilled after the 1000 mile service also... figured it might be from being on a lift and upright rather than on the side stand but you are probably right about them just putting in a whole 3 qts.

I just changed oil yesterday for the first time, and I put 2.75 qts to be about 1/3-way up from the fill mark. The 2.5 qts in the manual are low, it seems.

Dang...2.5 quarts just doesn't sound like much. My FJR would hold 4 quarts. Guess I've got to get used to this "dry sump" thing.

Well, after filling with 2.75 quarts to get the level up over the "add" mark, then going on a 90-mile ride, the level is about 3/4 of the way to "full"...perhaps the stated 2.5 quarts is the correct amount after all.

I guess we're all still on the "learning curve."

Chad,
Your FJR combined engine oil and transmission oil. Buells have a separate 1.0 quart tranny oil capacity. So if you want to compare, you'd want to use the 2.5 qts of engine oil plus the 1.0 qt of tranny oil for a total of 3.5 qts.

Dr. Greg,
Good point. There can easily be a little oil migrating down into the crankcase while the reservoir is being filled.

B. Blake
