Just had my Uly in for it's first service, and after getting it back from the dealer am noticing a tiny amount of oil weeping from the drain plug on the underside of the swingarm. I'm wondering if they forgot to install a gasket/ring before replacing the plug, but haven't received my service manual yet so am not sure if that's the setup. Can anyone confirm? Other reasons why I might see this? Thanks! | ||

It has an O-ring. Back out the drain-plug a little to see if the O-ring is there or not. | ||

Mine weeped some from the primary drain after the dealer did the 1k. They must have used some thread sealant as there was a silverish goo along with the oil. The stuff must have cured as after ~ 100 miles it sealed and hasn't leaked in 650 additional miles. Cheers | ||

Standard practice in Australia seems to be - let the o-ring get chewed out and use the white teflon (plumber's tape?) tape to seal the threads. No leaks, no weeps. Make sure the tape is only on the threads and doesn't get to float around in the oil. | ||

I have found that if the o-ring is not replaced each time it is removed/re-installed, there is a possibility it could leak. When removed, I noted the o-ring on my bike (which I presume is a similar interface on the Uly...looks the same based on pictures here)...the outer portion of the O-ring gets "bitten off". There is kind of like a V groove ripped out of it as the bolt is tightened up all the way and I see small pieces of it curled up and sticking out around the bolt head. I watched it more closely this time by not putting the socket all the way against the swingarm and the o-ring does in fact get cut to make a good seal. I could see if this was not replaced each time how the seal could be compromised. I don't like the idea of Teflon tape getting into the oil but if you put it closer to the bolt head and only about 1/2 the thickness of the threads you should be alright...my concern is you can't see what is going on as the tape winds its way in there. My service manual does not specifically state to replace the o-ring each time...but I do it because in any bike I had that had this design I did it anyways and never had a leak occur. I'd have to go back and read the service manual, but the manual is chocked full or "use Loctite thread sealer (not teflon tape)" in various places. | ||

When I performed my first oil change on the engine and trans, I noticed that the drain plugs had both an o-ring and a white dope on the plug threads. It reminded me of pipe dope with Teflon added. So being a pipefitter, I had some pipe dope with Teflon and this is what I used along with the o-ring and I have no leaks! Loctite makes an excellent thread sealer which I prefer over Teflon tape. It's not cheap though. |
