I laid it down tonight. Sitting at a stop sign waiting to turn right, a garbage truck decided to cut the corner at an excessive rate of speed. He saw me too late and there was little else I could do but bail off and let the bike drop.

Fortunately, the bike suffered only a very minor (barely noticeable) scuff on the right handguard and another on the underside of the right peg. I got away uninjured as well. The truck driver stopped and apologized saying he didn't see me. I asked him how he was able to get along with such a huge blindspot in his forward view from the cab. He ignored my sarcasm and helped me pick up the bike. I could tell he was as rattled as I was, but I will go to my grave wondering why anybody would cut a corner like that. I was on the far right edge of the street. I do that to take advantage of the slightly lower elevation usually found there so that I can more easily flat foot it with my left boot.

How he could not have seen me is also a mystery. I had my right turn signal and high beam on. His truck was pointed right at me and it was in broad daylight.

Whew! Close one! Nothing scarier than a big truck headed for you. Glad you are OK.

Glad to hear you are alright. Now that the politeness is out of the way, tell the Uly I am sending it a get well card! Remember orange shows up better than black!

Even though I can sympathize about the new bike being hurt, any run in with a truck you can walk away from, is a good one. I'm glad you are okay and were able to ride away.

Orange might have helped, but I doubt it could be proven definitively. Although, I would be willing to test it out if anyone wants to donate the orange body parts.

Glad you and Uly are relatively unscathed! : )

Glad you and the Uly are OK. Cutting corners like that is just a BAD driving habit a lot of people have. I see so many people do that on a regular basis, even on blind turns. They never know when they're the guy that's gonna be meeting the garbage truck or 18-wheeler.

Glad you're OK Lowflyer. I'd bet $50 that the idiot was on the phone. I recently read a motorcycle accident analysis that said that 1) Most MC accidents were a result of the caged driver not seeing the rider (big surprise). 2) The most visible colors for a rider to wear were red and yellow. There was a lot more but I thought this was most relevant to your situation. Stay safe buddy!

Orange may be more visible, but black is faster.

I do appreciate the kind thoughts and the thinly veiled argument-baiting that I enjoy so much.

I would say that the Uly is even a little tougher than it looks in black.

I have gone over it with a fine-toothed delousing comb like the one that comes in a box of R.I.D. and have found no other injuries. I dropped it on gravel covered pavement and the garbage truck even bumped the back tire (yes, it was that close) as it lay on the ground causing it to turn on its side. I think that is when the scuff actually happened since I was doing my best to lay it down gently while I was violently ejecting myself. My back is just a bit sore today so I guess I put more effort into it than I had realized.

The funny thing is, I don't remember how I got my left leg over to the right side of the bike. That would be such an unnatural thing to dismount the Uly on the right side. You would think it would require more memorable effort.

Lowflyer,
The exact same thing happened to me the other day too! I was pulling up to a stop sign when all of a sudden a Honda comes flying around the corner making a right turn. This young high school girl was going way too fast and took the turn WIDE. I swerved over towards the gutter and threw my hand up in disgust. She looked petrified as she didn't see me until the last second. Thankfully I got over. Of course she just drives off while I am sitting on the bike in the gutter. With my adrenaline running, I whip the bike around and start following her to ask her WTF? She would not stop and ignored me. After a couple of blocks I figured it was worthless and quit following her. She learned her lesson for sure because I scared the crap out of her by following her for a couple of blocks! She probably thought I was going to call the police on her...

No, the hand guard is the only visible mark and it is about the size of a shirt button. The scrape on the peg is only visible if you fold it up and look underneath. If the damage had been more severe, or if the driver had fled the scene, I would have filed an accident report with the police and gone the insurance claim route. As it is, I actually felt sorry for the guy. I think he was worried about his job. I am just glad to have escaped un-gimped.

I had a lady rear end me once. That wasn't fun. But what was funny is that when I landed on her hood, it left a big dent in it, and when I pulled my Ducati from her Staintune impaled bumper, it fell off. $800 worth of damage to my bike....her car needed a new hood, bumper, and paint. LOL!

Lowflyer,

In my best snooty Havard (pronounced "Hah-vahd"; ), accent...

It seems to me that "un-gimped" would imply that you were initially "gimped", which would be inaccurate. Therefore might I suggest that the more precise term should be "non-gimped." c ontent Here-here old chum.

"I will go to my grave wondering why anybody would cut a corner like that"...well, yes you might if they all drive there like they do here!
I am constantly being cut off at intersections by morons who think they are in a car rally race. Wouldn't worry if I was in my truck when it happened, but at least once a day it happens when on my bike...damn idiots!

I say dear man, that gimpedness surely implies a degree to which one is able to walk erect. Given that, I indeed spent my whole first year of life completely gimped. I have been un-gimped since about 13 months of age and then I was still partially gimped for at least that first year of un-gimpedness. Except for having broken my 5th metatarsal during a savage game of raquetball in Mildenhall, UK, I have been un-gimped ever since.

Lee,
Maybe trash trucks should be orange!

Glad to hear you and the bike are okay, although this does make a person begin to wonder about your mental health. First hanging out with the KCmob, then riding around with your riding buddies "myself" and "I". Now your jumping off of perfectly good motorcycles. What's next jumping out of perfectly good airplanes with Keith and Richie!

Aside from a little PTTSD (Post Trash Truck Stress Disorder) and a propensity for spontaneous violent self-ejections, I'm fine.
