I was recently at the Lakeland, Florida dealer and was informed that I should inspect my ULY for possible contact between the front tire and the chin spoiler. Apparently someone had either done a stoppie or compressed the front suspension enough during a test ride to cause the front tire to make contact with the chin spoiler. I have inspected their showroom bike and saw the marking on the spoiler -- a rubber mark about 2" x 1/2" -- on the bike. I have transported my ULY by trailer and compressed the front almost to bottom and still have not seen contact. I was informed by the dealer the head bearing set is not adjustable, so I am wondering if some of the bearing sets are either bad, or the rake is slightly different --in error-- from other ULY frames. Has anyone discovered this issue. I have not read about it here, but that doesnt mean it hasn't come up.

Well, atleast it is something that has been discussed... but what is the fix. There isn't adjustment for the bearings that I have heard about and flex for a front end with the diameter like these seems wrong.

Looks more like a chip from a stone or something to me. Very small and seems like wrong location. The little tail that makes it look like a b is also inconsistent with a tire rub. Hard to tell from pictures though.
You sure this is a tire rub?

I think it is probably from a rock, for the neck bearings to be loose enough for the tire to make contact the bike would have to handle like crap,
this thing rails.I can't see the forks flexing that much either, the bike feels rock solid under all conditions.I posted the picture to see if that was the same mark that others were seeing.

Tire clearance as compared to a Nickel. Actual clearance is 1 inch
I measured the chin fairing to tire clearance with the wheel pointing strait ahead on no load on the bike. Again...it's a stretch of the imagination that the forks/head bearing could flex the 1 inch gap and continue to function properly. If the tire is indeed contacting the chin fairing, it's gonna be happening with the forks compressed and the engine moving/rocking forward. Suspension would likely be set too soft for the load and some extreme braking going on.

Just thinking out loud here without real facts. Besides just the design of the bike, it could be simply the chin fairing not mounted properly-not seating on the muffler all the way? Or something defective with the rubber engine mounts/isolators. The tubers' oil filter would magically have a dent in them once in a while from contacting part of the frame/engine mount points.

Just ideas here.... Not calling anyone out and definitely not saying there is something inherently wrong with the Uly.

Would someone please verify whether or not the steering head bearings are adjustable for preload?

It makes me wonder if there could be an adjustment or fairing fit problem, since I ride mine so hard and have yet to have that problem.

As per the factory manual it only stated to torq the steering head cap-nut to 32 ft.lbs.
No mention of any adjusting.

I have no rub mark on mine and I've hit the brake pretty damn hard once or twice. No stoppies though.

I think it may be more attributed to engine movement than anything else but that's just my opinion.

Yes they will touch at times and the "Motor Company" is working on a fix. I will post pictures later, but it shows up as a small black mark on the center of the fairing. The district service manager has told me that it will be covered by warranty. So during your next dealer visit go on record with the issue and let them go to "Tech Support" for the answer and final fix. It also happens to XB12S (Longs). ... Terry

Blake, http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=142838&post=541034#PO ST541034 It'd be terrific if we could link these topics. Good KV info in the making.

The mark on the center of the chin fairing is what I noticed on the showroom bike in Lakeland, Florida, there wasn't a large gash or anything like that, but it is good to see the manufacturer is already addressing it.
