Went to bed last night with pleasant thoughts of picking up my new Uly today. Got up early and rode 65 miles in the cold to the dealer, getting there about 0930.
Signed the paperwork, turned over my M2, keys and title. Then waited, and waited, and waited for my new bike.
Finally the salesman comes out and tells me a plug fouled on the test drive...Huh?? They were going to change the plugs and check the timing and TPS.
Waited some more. A Mech came out and gave me a couple of fuel-fouled plugs, saying that was what happens when you use the throttle to start a bike with FI. Told me just a while longer.
Waited some more. Looked through a glass door and could see my Uly hooked up to a computer with a couple of Mechanics messing with it. I suggested to the salesman he find out what was going on. He came out saying they had set the timing and now there was an error reading on the computer. They didn't know what was wrong. Three hours later I finally asked for my keys and title back for the M2. It was obvious this bike had not been prepped for delivery and I was not sure they knew what the heck they were doing. This is a Buell dealer in name only.
To the salesman's credit he did offer to have the Uly delivered when it was ready and give me my first service free.
Now I'm not sure I would have confidence in this bike anyway.
Dang!!

Sounds like they screwed up the TPS setting. I understand it is easy to do wrong if you don't follow procedures well.
The bike will be reliable once the settings are done correctly.

Agreed-- The Uly is a very well sorted out bike. Consider sticking with the purchase and ensuring the dealership sweetens the deal to offset the inconvenience (PIA)

Cliffb,
Have you reconsidered yet? At least the dealer was trying to get it right before letting it go out the door. I hate reading about how the timing was off, but corrected at the first 1M check up. To me that means the break-in period was done with the engine out of tune. Then some dealers turn around and charge for set-up. Sounds like the salesman had the cart before the horse.

Once the timing/TPS setting are good, I think you'd really enjoy the bike.

Well,
After cooling off I've decided to give the salesman another shot. I called him awhile ago. He assures me the bike has been gone through very carefully. It runs great and is ready to go. The Mech told him the TPS was off.
We'll try again tomorrow. What's irritating is these problems should have been caught on the pre-delivery check. (which probably was not done until I was waiting)
Thanks Guys for the encouragement.
And Bob, thanks and same to you.
Cliff

You may end up with a better running bike to begin with than others have had, because of this.

You will enjoy it, no doubt.

From your profile "low tolerance for stupidity" may have had something to do with it. Glad you're reconsidering and echo the sentiment that at least they were trying to right the situation.

Cliff,

Trust me. The Uly is an awesome bike. I don't own the stock, no interest in the dealership, etc. Love my Uly though.

It is NOT a dirt bike. Neither is the BMW GS despite what hooey you may hear in places. Gravel roads, sure. Fire roads, depends on your ability. Double or single track? Depends on the trail and more on your ability.

I just did a GNARLY dual sport ride in the very large mountains around Frazier Park on Sunday. I rode my DIRT bike, a DRZ400S. The terrain was ALL I could handle and more. The biggest bike on the entire ride (which had a lot of bikes) was a KLR 650 and I rode with that guy. He went down 4 times (I went down twice) and we skipped a couple of the hardest stretches, although we did a couple others that were very challenging. Uly's and GS's need not apply.

My DRZ is for the dirt. The Uly is for everything else.

Life is good.

Gents I am now an Uly owner. It's been raining all day so it will be delivered this afternoon. (I'm a wus)
Time to get a service and parts manual on order.
I've already discovered they gave me the wrong owner's manual but I'm sure that will be taken care of.
Looking forward to riding my new bike..

I have a few questions but I'll put those in separate posts.

All aircooled bikes like rain. It makes them water cooled! : )
