We're about to head into Asia on our Uly and was wanting a small but useful tool kit, given the factory kit as a basis what else should I add to be able to maintain the bike through 20,000 miles away from dealerships!

- A short flex handle 3/8" ratchet with an extension and appropriate sockets; one of my favorite sizes is 1/2" as it fits most of the exhaust bolts/nuts on my S2 : )
- Vise grip pliers
- electrical tape
- wire ties
- some sort of steel/epoxy compound for metal repair
- appropriate size allen keys
- stubby combination wrenches
- tire plug kit
- electrical multi meter
- copies of important service manual pages.
- selection of electrical connectors and fuses

Others will chime in with more.
Have a great trip and please post a report when you get back.

Hello Henrik, I found with my S2 I needed both SAE allen wrenches (ball end of course) AND Metric allen wrenches.

That has always irked me. I wish Buell would go all metric or all SAE. Just pick one! <g> Not sure what's up with the Uly in that regard.

In a remote area I would consider a spare belt (or belt patch kit if one exists) just in case.

20k away from Dealers?

Whoo boy! What are you going to do about tires and changing them?

I've done it at home and it wasn't easy, but there is an art to the task I'm told...

You'll need oil changes too over that many miles... Not hard, but you'll need oil and filters.

Maybe drop ship tires/materials at a reputable shop.

Forget the allen wrenches and go with a bit driver attachment for your socket wrench and a comprehensive set of bits, screwdriver, both philips and slotted, torx, and allen head (metric and SAE as required, no need to carry sizes you won't need. Small vice grips and adjustable wrench. Tire change kit.

Please keep and post a rider's log so we can all share in your wicked cool adventure. : )

In addition to Henrik's list, I add a decent amount of tubing of some sort, in case somebody needs to loan me gas : ) I just keep a small container of bottled water there as well, if I need to move gas I can drink the water and use the plastic bottle to shuttle the gas.

And some electrical wire, which can either be a splice, or a fastener.

I found with my S2 I needed both SAE allen wrenches

Me too : )

Let me add a few things to the list:

- tools for spark plug changing. Don't know what it takes on the Uly, but have heard that on the XB a long wobble extension will make changing the rear plug easier.
- as Jim mentioned; tire irons.
- a selection of parts that will leave you stranded if they break, such as brake and clutch levers, shifter, rear brake pedal, clutch cable. I guess you could add belt in there, but it depends on how wild you're going and how far from any kind of service.
- As Blake wrote, ratcheting allen wrenches are easier to carry and use, and I carry one of these kits with me:

- some way of getting air in that patched tire again : )

Thanks guys, we've got 2,500 miles on the Muell and just ridden approx 1,800 miles (zig-zagged) from Brisbane to Melbourne, trip report coming!

What about the notebook/electronic interface thingy for checking tune, I'm computer literate, would I be able to use it?
