I just noticed that http://www.motorcycle.com/ has included the Uly in a sports-tourer shoot-out test on their site. I don't presently subscribe, so I can't tell you what the article says, but they're generally pretty Buell-friendly.

It'll be interesting to see how the Uly makes out.

Uly third best. FJR1300 05' last! Generally a pretty good showing for the Uly against bikes that are pure sport/touring. The BMW R1200Rt won. It deserves it. I've ridden one and it's sweet (and $$$). The ULy was pinging and detonating even with premium, unfortunate. Other than that the testers liked the engine. It was evident that they had a lot of FUN with the Uly and liked its character and handling.

It's a great read. Very funny, good insight. There were two rankings... best absolute sport tourer, and "bike we would most likely buy if we had a real job".

I won't ruin any suprises, but the Uly did just fine. I think it was a fair report.

Additionally, it was unsaid, but if you look closely at the wallpaper shots, it is clear the Uly had been crashed. Perhaps this is the Cycle World bike. Look at the side cases on the enlarged photos and you can see it. I expect this explains one of their complaints (sticky throttle) . Their other complaint (pingin under load) was probably simply timing that needed adjusted. Both pretty much non issues, but the bike did fine regardless.

I suspect the timing is too advanced if they are getting pinging. Easy to correct.

Timing on mine had to be adjusted at first service...too advanced. This seems to be common. Wonder why they are doing that at the factory?

Regardless...isn't it amazing that Buell has a bike moto-journalists might consider a contemporary of the others in the comparison?

Wonder how that comparison is being received over on the FJR forums. I bet those guys are darned near apoplectic at this point.

I bought the software and cable for $200 to reset the TPS and set the timing. Will pay for itself.

Where did you get the software and cable from?

"Software to set timing"?

The crash scenario might also explain the shifting bing no different than prior Buells which is contrary to all the other reports I've seen.

Two of the four testers chose the Uly as the bike they would buy for themselves.

It's a good comparo.

Not serious, but those bags are supposed to be REALLY tough. They did not get that way with just a parking lot tip over.

I rode a BMW R1200RT last week. It pinged terribly off idle. The brakes had a strange resonance near the end of slow stops. It was a nice machine, great touring features, loved the cruise control.

I was very proud to pull away on my S3T and will be keeping it.

I also wonder what's up with BMW requiring 98 octane in most of their bikes.

Well they won't be selling many bikes here as the highest octane in this part of the world is 93

"I also wonder what's up with BMW requiring 98 octane in most of their bikes."

I believe that that is a Euro designation. AKI v. ROM or something like that.

Here's the summary table of how the MOrons rated the various bikes in their review...

Pretty darn impressive that the most telling of the categories, "the bike I'd buy with my own money" category, has the Buell beating the Honda Interceptor, the Honda ST1300 and the Yamaha FJR1300.

Way to go Buell! : )

Well? Substitute VSTrom for ST1300, and do you agree?

Great article. I find it odd that they would write as if a sticky throttle as a feature on all Ulys. Mine snaps to idle with no problem. I have also yet to hear any pinging or detonating in my motor (even before its first service). Excellent writing just the same.
