Well I did it, did my research, found the perfect bike, called every dealer within 400 miles of my home when I finally found an orange Uly in Festus MO. So this past Thursday, I scored a couple of Cardinal baseball tickets, drove to St. Louis, drank one or two beers more than I should have at the ball game, spent a sleepless night like a kid before Christmas and finally picked up the new bike.4 Wow, it is everything I thought it would be and more. The past few years I have been riding on a Ducati ST2 and a BMW K1200RS. (They are now for sale if anyone is interested!) Thank you Mr. Buell for building a bike for me. I sure hope the bags come in soon, and did I read the full race exhaust negates the warranty? Anyway - I got it home late Friday night and only put about 25 miles on it. Saturday put another 100 or so and today another 100. Man, it is hard keeping that thing below 3000 rpm's! I have a feeling the fun just begins there. This bike reminds me of my old Honda XL250 under 3000 rpm's - and that is a good thing! So what is it like over 3000 rpm's? My appetite has been whetted. What really impresses me, the set up is first rate, you really do not need to add anything to the bike, other than bags if you want to tour. I had to spend $1000's on the other BMW and Duc to make them comfortable, and neither comes close in comfort to the stock Ulysses! So tell me, what can I expect after the break-in period? | ||

You can expect fun, fun, fun! The bike just starts getting good at 3000 rpm. Only gripe is that I haven't gotten my bags, yet! Was hoping they would be here before the ride over to Biketoberfest on Thurs. | ||

Royintulsa: Thanks for posting your blurb! After dealing with a local (unnamed) dealership and being told about uly availability initially late september and then december... I decided to call Surdyke's. The guy on the phone told me they just sold an orange one on Saturday. lol must've been yours! Then he said he thought there was one in the warehouse.... It must have been mine, I loaded it up on Friday and have about 350 miles on it after the weekend. So far, so good, can't wait to get the bags in and travel back that way on the bike. I am really happy with it. Looking for an exhaust pipe now and that is probably the only modification I am going to do. | ||

I would strongly recommend the Drummer Muffler. Puts the torque and extra ponies right where you want them 2500rpm to 4500rpm. You send your in and he does the modification on it for 400.00. | ||

How much louder is the Drummer? I usually leave the house at about 0530, and even though we don't have any real close neighbors, I (and they) appreciate how quiet the stocker is. | ||

Kevin says they are louder than stock but quieter than most like D & D or Force. He has a web site and I think he has the sound of the muffler on there. I used a Wileyco on my last bike (M2) as it was quieter than any other I had heard. You can not get the increase in power without the increase in sound but I think the drummer may be one of the quieter ones. He also has an option for fiberglass packing inside or not. I would go to his site and ask him about the sound. I too have neighbours and who wants the person next door to wake them up every morning. | ||

Hi guys, BEWARE of the noise output of your Ulysses! If you plan to ride on Forest service lands you can be checked. 96 db is the limit. In fact, it helps greatly if you have a muffler that is USFS approved (yep, they exist). Now if your Uly is going to see pavement and country backroads only then no worries, do your Drummer or whatever. I'm keeping my quiet stock exhaust, because I plan to do adventure riding when I'm not sport riding my new Adventure/Sport bike. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara | ||

There are a lot of advantages to a more quiet exhaust, like sneaking up on sport bikes and blowing by them. It would probably embarrass them even more with absolutely no modifications to the bike what so ever. | ||

Just so you know, the Uly muffler is not Approved as a spark arresting muffler. 96 dbs is a pretty loud noise, certainly louder than the stock Uly is. | ||

Hello Thunderbox, I don't think the stock exhaust on my DRZ400S is USFS approved either. There is zero indication to that effect on the muffler. BUT I am told by reputable sources that an unmodified street legal motorcycle muffler is acceptable. I haven't been turned away yet with my DRZ. Like my DRZ the Uly exhaust may not have the USFS stamp on it, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be approved if Buell went through the exercise, right? Or are you inferring that a street legal Uly will not be admitted on Forest Service lands? Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara | ||

No inferral at all. I really have no idea about the regulations about forestry driving. I just assumed it would need that certification. Why have that certification if it is not required, that is my question. I just noticed that the Uly didn't have anything saying that on it. Here in Canada no real difference driving on the highway in the middle of the forest or on a road in the forest, a spark in either situation could be problamatic. | ||

Hello Thunderbox, Same problem here in SoCal. Some bonehead tosses a cigarette out the car window and the state burns for 4 days... I suspect that all street legal vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles) have an exhaust that already complies with the requirements. It's the aftermarket stuff that becomes an issue, both for noise and for lack of a spark arrestor. My buddy has a new GS1200, now I'm going to check and see if it has the USFS approval stamped on it as well. I'm guessing it doesn't either. And we see the GS's all over the back country. How fun are the Buell sport bikes? I am selling my Ducati and BMW, but if I decide life is not worth living without a sport bike, I would be interested in a Buell. The Ducati and BMW just do not fit me anymore. | ||

Roy you already own a Sport bike. The Ulysses you bought is as much a sport bike as anything Buell will make this year. Don't believe me go try another bike of theres you will see what I mean. | ||

I've just done a 700 mile ride in company with a 1000 Ducati, 2 BMW RG1200s, a BMW R2, a 1200 Honda cruiser and a 1500 Kawasaki cruiser, they were all salivating over the Muell, particularly when we got to some rough stuff and I sped up where they were forced to slow down! PS, the bike sizes are correct, not sure of models, my eyes were only for my Muell!  ) |
