Here are some shots of the Uly at York Open House BattleTrax.
This bike is just too much fun. I thought my S1 was the best BattleTrax bike. Not anymore!

Nice Two_Buells,
I am posting your pics on our local Buell website. That is the first toe grinding pic I have seen.
Why not walk down and F all of em?

I could buy a Uly being faster on a btrax course then an S1.

In terms of comparing the two, the only thing the S1 has that the Uly lacks is shorter suspension travel.

On the other hand, the Uly has the fuel in frame, the shorter wheelbase, the zero lash drivetrain, the ZTL rotor, a far better transmission, more motor, and better leverage on the bars.

Holy Cr*p! Has Buell really gotten that much stuff into production in that short a time? The "industrial scale engineer" in me is very impressed...

How does the S1 compare with the Uly for weight?

Another interesting comparison would be Uly versus a 9sx...

Man am I jonesing to do another battletrax somewhere and somehow...

Hi Chad,

IMHO grinding a toe on the Uly is easy. The bike wants to lean. I stuffed my boot hard into the asphalt on Saturday. Had my arches on the pegs (feels natural that way on the Uly), I may instead go with balls of my feet on the pegs for spirited cornering for a little more clearance.

That's generally a very good idea. People have gotten quite hurt from riding "duck foot". Foot gets caught on pavement - bike keeps going ... you get the picture : )

Mike,
Thanks for the brief "seat time" on the Uly. I was on a very tight schedule, otherwise I would have hung around to beg a ride! Heck, I might have even Battletrax'd my ST1100....

Hi Henrik,

I hear ya'.

A few thoughts...

Once I pinned my left boot beneath the bike and the pavement (riding "archie" during a left turn of course). I had to keep turning (straight wasn't an option) so I was committed. <g> The S2 handled fine, the Sidi's protected my foot, it all worked out okay. Just ride the bike and ignore the scraping <g>.

But generally I've always ridden "ballsy" (balls of feet on pegs) when doing spirited riding. This allowed me to move around a lot on the seat which felt good on the S2. The bike seemed to like it and so did I. Kept me out of trouble and typically the peg feelers would touch first, unless a toe was angled downward ever so slightly.

OTOH, on my DRZ400S I typically ride "archie". When off road I'm standing most of the time and the arches of my enduro boots fit nicely onto the pegs to hold me in position while the bike bops around doing it's thing.

Now comes the Uly. The footpegs seem perfectly designed for "archie" style riding. Which means I'll need to think a bit to get into the "ballsy" position.

As for your comment, it's my understanding that, among racers, the "archie" style is more prevalent than the "ballsy" style. I've also read that some track schools teach one technique over the other and it varies.

Further, I've noted some "archie" style riders will instinctively put the lower boot on the peg (ballsy) only when a specific corner calls for it.

Interesting stuff to be sure.

I absolutely don't want an injury because my boot got caught under the bike.

Regards,

That first picture definitely belongs in the "Cool Buell Pics" section. That may be the first Uly picture in there and it deserves to be.

cool stuff,
if you notice I do ride on the "ballsy" side. my left foot is on the ballsy side and my right foot is dragging the rear brake through the corner.

Having followed, on my Buell, that ST100 for many miles, including 2 passes through Deal's Gap, I'd not take that bet.
