I started a Uly specific tire thread in the knowlege vault for those needing some info on dual sport tires.
Don't shoot the messenger.....

Hi,

test rode Uly last week.

The bike don't perform well with current tires, felt unstable at high speeds. The bike didn't felt as 'planted' as my current Multistrada. I had already agreed on trading in my Multi before the test ride (at a good price), but after the test ride I'm not sure what to do. Could this just be the setup of the suspension?

The German magazine Motorrad commented the same issue, they reported that after changing to standard sport/touring tires, the bike was much better. But if you go for a more road oriented tires, you loose the off pavement capabilities......

Any comments?

Geo,

There is no such thing as the perfect tire. If it has some off road ability, it will give something up on the road, and vis versa.

It is the nature of any Dual Sport. They are not the best dirt bike, and they are not the best street bikes. You can find many more competent machines that do either chore better.

It it feels unstable at high speeds, maybe it needs to be ridden as slower speeds in order to keep with its design function. It would be like complaining that a Jeep doesn't corner as well as a Corvette.

It seems to me, that its design purpose is to share abilities of both worlds. If this doesn't match your riding style or needs, then a dual sport or the new word, Adventure Sport, might not be what your looking for.

Life's a compromise, and so are most bikes.

There's also the suspension adjustment, from what I've read the factory/dealers settings should be reset to suit the rider ASAP.

I'll tell you Thursday when we pick ours up!

Cool. Thanks Steve! I bet the tire company that comes up with a decent set of more offroadish tires for the Uly will do well.

I did a couple hundred miles on my new Ulysses this morning--a brief dash of highway and a mix of smooth, high speed sweepers, tight back roads and fire roads.

I find the tires to be quite good. If I lost one or two mph on a fast sweeper to my time on this route vs. my former Aprilia, I more than made up for it in the bumpy stuff.

There is a tiny bit of weave at high speed, I admit, but I would call it extremely minor, to the point that I basically forgot all about it.

The dealership did set up suspension for my weight--I think they're given ranges and mine was dialed for 200-230. I'll be making a couple of fine tuning adjustments, but the basic package is good. The tires grip to the edge on pavement with confidence---although I'm still working on my personal fear of taking such a tall bike all the way over ; ) and I found the tires, suspension and the phenomenal balance of the bike to be reassuring on dirt and gravel.

I guess I'm saying that the bike feeling planted is a matter of 1) suspension 2) adjusting your style and 3) your brain playing tricks on you--the tires are top notch.

Having said that, I'm grateful Stevem123's time in setting up the thread and look forward to new tires as this genre grows.

I've had great luck and solid feel with Anakees and distanzias and I believe both of those come in appropriate sizes and offer some dual sport attributes.

Loving it--my only gripe is I'm having trouble getting used to a motor that sounds like its about to grenade all the time :0

Are you sure about this?? I could not find them in a dual sport tread in the Buell size, except for a Distanzia front tire.

Where did you see them?

Frank et al,

My apologies--that just doesn't appear to be correct. It looks like the Anakees are out of the running all together and the Distanzias don't come wider than a 160 rear. Sorry for my apparent misinformation campaign. It looks like the Scorpion Sync is a possibility and, well, it's lucky for me that I like the 616. http://www.pirellimoto.com/en_96/tires/template_categorie.jhtml?productid=16919& catid=96STSTR&selected=desc
