I had an opportunity to demo the Ulysses at Liberyt HD last Saturday and I thought I might offer some of my thoughts on it. The first thing I noticed that the engine was pinging like a mo fo, every time I got on it a bit. It did wheelie easily though and it pulled hard. My new 12ss has never pinged once but I have generally run Sunoco Ultra in it. Being from a dirt bike background I loved the high bars. Standing up and riding was very comfortable. I could easily imagine blasting down a dirt road over small whoops and wheelieing through mud puddles on it. I so wanted to slip over onto the grassy shoulder on the GS Parkway but I resisted the temptation (I should have done it). At 5'10" I was on my tip toes when stopped, similar to my DRZ400. No, biggie there, but tight woods riding (where you really do need real brush guards) would be out of the question. Lay that baby down on an off camber hillside out in no where & it would stay there 'till the end of time. But then it wasn't designed for that. Charging out of a slow speed, tight corner will lift the front end and make you think a bit. The Uly seemed to rev more freely at low end than my new SS did with all the stock stuff still on the SS (before I put the Drummer, race ECM and K&N on it). It could be that I only had a few hundred miles on the SS and the Uly had around 8K if I remember correctly. I'll be doing a write up on my views of the 9 vs the 12 fairly soon, having owned both now. I just want to get 1k miles on the 12 to be as fair as possible. At this point I'm favoring the 9 but I have to break the 12 in a bit more. One thing is for sure so far. The 12 with the new Drummer SS, race ecm and K&N is WAY better than stock. | ||

Hi, I demo'd Glendale Buell's Uly last Saturday. No engine issues noticed (no stumbling, no pinging, no surging). Just quiet, effortless power. So I bought one. Only about 170 miles so far but I've noticed none of those symptoms on mine either. Perhaps the bike is sensitive to fuel grade? Eor also noted the timing was set wrong on his new Uly. Buell recommends 91 octane min. Perhaps someone put some low grade in it. I've never heard mine ping at all. | ||

I $%^ing knew I shouldn't have said that. Mines pinging now too!! Karp. Bringing it in for the 1K tuesday... see what they say. | ||

If I understand correctly, the 1k service includes a throttle position sensor adjustment which should cure your pinging. | ||

HAve you test driven the Ulysses yet Goo? I'm interested to see how you compare it to your Multistrada. To me, the Multistrada has a very similar feel but is much more lean/minimal. The XB12X has more substance...more bike. Both are balanced very well though I feel the Buell has the advantage. DAve | ||

Yes Dave, I've tested the Uly 4 times! I like the Uly very much, it's much more comfy, and have a different power curve than the Multi. The Multi feels stronger at low revs, but the Uly has the power delivered more through the whole register. I find the Uly also much more reliable when you go for the off pavement environment. I have 33' km on my Multi, but I never like to go off pavement with it. This stops me from taking the many of the 'adventure' roads here in Norway. What I don't like, and this is so far a deal breaker for me; I find the bike a little unstable/floating at high speeds (above 60 mph, on pavement). This is also reported in the german magazine Motorrad. They weren't able to solve this before they switched to a more road oriented tires. My dealer has suggested that I can test their demo bike with Pirelli Scorpion Sync, and I will try to do this before the winter once again put a temporary break in my major preferred outdoor activity. | ||

Goo, go see the Tires thread on this board. Are you sure it wasn't just hunting a little in rain grooves on the roadway? That's fairly common in some areas. I haven't noticed it at all so far. Jim in Santa Barbara |
