Hi Saro, Certainly that could have happened. And probably has.

Damage to the interior of the tire is critical. One might say I was lucky in that I had a small puncture, nearly vertical, very close to the center of the tire in a deep block of tread.

If it had to happen seemingly that was a good spot.

Tire companies (and plug makers) don't advise riding on plugs, but who can say how much of that is due to fear of prosecution? And there are documented cases of plugs being thrown, but we don't know if they were installed properly or the condition of the puncture.

It all depends. ; )

Jim,

I've ridden many miles on a worn-out tire that should have been replaced. It never blew out or leaked.

I've got about 3,200 miles on my Uly and I will need a new rear very soon if not within the next couple weeks..... If you decide to throw out that tire, I'll be glad to put some more miles on it for you!

I lurk often, but don't post much. Here is my .02 for what it's worth!

I have a '03 XB9S (really, really want a Uly!!) that I've ridden right around 25k miles since I bought it new in March of '03. I have ridden the "life and then some" out of every set of tires so far. To me this means to the point that the steel belts are showing 360. Once I had to air it up in order to ride it to the dealership to have the tire changed, because it went flat overnight.

...I have used plugs on off-road tires many times with success. I have even taken a well worn 35"er to a semi-tire shop and had them repair a big tear in a sidewall. I never had any problems with that either.

Just recently my wife & I picked up a little screw in the side of the tread (just around the edge of the tire)while driving around town. ('99 Jeep GC w/ P265/16s) I went to remove the screw but it started loosing air and so I left it in. (Like many times before with other tires) The next day she drove it on business and on her way home, after driving roughly 150-200 miles with that little screw, the tire let go on the highway without any warning. (The blown out area was right where the screw had been.) Up until this, I would have not really given much thought or concern to using a plug on my bike, or car, or Jeep.

I say ditch the tire and get a new one. If it lets go, you most certainly will have wished you had.

Pay your nickel and take your chance... or in this case, Save a nickel...

PS - Anyone ride in the Southern IL. area, let me know! My wife & I each have '03 Lightnings and ride often!

I've patched a rear tire with the plugs you put in from the outside (they look like a twizzler).

As long as it's not too close to the outside edge, it's fine. I ran mine for a few thousand miles, occasionally up to 105mph. No problems at all. If you get the tire off and throw a patch from the inside, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I'm interested to know if anyone has any further input or knowledge about the PRODUCTION NUMBER correlation with the SEQUENTIAL NUMBER in the Vin.

The only reason I care is because I just purchased #002 of the '06 Uly. Not for bragging rights..., just curious.
