After spending a lot of time absorbing as much as I could on this terrific forum, I'm not sure that I want to pursue modifying my new Ulysses. TPS resets, flat spots in the power curve, off idle stalls, ECM inconsistencies, are the kinds of things I am reading that are discouraging me from going after performance upgrades. I heard a demo bike run and I really wanted to step up to at least a better sounding exhaust. Am I just a victim of the nature of good forums which tend to focus on help with problems or is the Buell just so well tweaked from the factory that it's best left stock?

I'd leave it stock for now and see what develops....Let someone ELSE experiment and benefit from THEIR work.....juust my .02 cents!!

I could see maybe a different exhaust but only to change the sound of the bike. It has plenty of performance already.

I had planned to leave the Uly stock, but I am a little disappointed with the state of the FI tuning of the engine...stumbling off idle and a usable powerband I feel is too narrow.

I'll probably be looking to an aftermarket tuner or exhaust system if the engine performance doesn't improve with the first service and TPS reset.

I understand why they used the 1203 engine in the Uly, but I miss the 984 engine.

Sorry Eor, (I think the 1st service will fix it) in complete contrast I find the Uly's motor performance and FI tuning to be extremely good, this is coming from one who has spent countless hours fitting and tuning a MegaSquirt EFI system to my 04 XB12S, because I felt the 04 12 stock ecm was lacking in rideability and a couple of other issues. So far the Uly ecm has addressed those issues and I'm pretty happy about that to say the least. I cannot fault it. I fitted a Drummer for sound and it goes extra well. I know the K&N made a huge diff to the XB12S but the Uly is running so well I don't feel I need any more power at the moment, still learning the new bike, and just riding it. What I most love about the Uly is that it doesn't look anything like what it can do (to a jap rider), it's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Opto,
Did you send your muffler to Drummer or did they have a Uly exchange to send you? Any clearance issues? Does the Drummer work well with the stock ECM? Sorry for the barrage of questions but I'm about to travel the same path that you have taken. Thanks

Sounds like you Uly guys need to convert from EFI to a CV-40 carb. Then you could solve all the low speed/low RPM issues by going to a #48 slow speed jet and exposing the mixture screw for fine tuning. I'm being facetious of course.

Jack : )

Brother, the Drummer I fitted is off an XB12S/R, no clearance issues but best to fit one with the outlet on the left hand side, since a RHS outlet looks like it's blasting some exhaust gas onto the lower belt guard, which doesn't get hot, but just doesn't look that great. No problems at all with the ecm adjusting to it, it runs very strong. I think a standard Drummer is an extremely good choice for a Uly as you'll keep the bottom and top end power and should have an increase over stock.

Frank,
I've e-mailed them to ask the question specifically. I post their response. It looks like opto was able to make a 12S muffler work with out a problem.

Here is Drummer's response to whether they could work their magic on a Ulysses muffler.

Yes, any stock Buell muffler since 1996....

Good to see it was an easy fix Eor. Too much good has been said contradictory to your experience. Like I said, I'm just glad you got it fixed...

I was lucky that the Buell service tech bothered to come out and ask me how I was enjoying the bike. I was content to see what, if any, effect the TPS reset had first. He said the cam was advanced 12 degrees, IIRC.

I hauled the bike up there and only rode it briefly after the timing was adjusted, but the short loop around the dealer parking lot was enough for me to notice a difference.

I've run across another Uly owner with similar symptoms as mine. His is due for the 1K service and he now knows to ask them to look at the timing.

Glad it's OK, Eor. A Buell or Sportster delivered with advanced timing is not unusual unfortunately. Keep the revs over 3k and ride it like you stole it, and I'm sure the XB12 motor will grow on you.

Doncasto,
My take on all the feedback is: improve the sound with a Drummer and leave the rest alone. I guess that's a partial farcle, or perhaps a parkle!

Yeh, I farkled more than enough with the 04 XB12S, now all it proly ever really needed was the Drummer, the K&N, and an 06 ULY ECM! (if it's compatible). Sometime if I think I want more power out of the Uly I'll fit the K&N airfilter from the Lightning to see what happens, other than that I hope to keep it bone stock.

I suppose within a year or two we'll see custom Uly's with 88" motors, full supermotard bodywork etc, : )
