The nice folks from Dale's HD (Mount Vernon, IL) called Wednesday to say that they had a Ulysses demo. I politely told them that it was unlikely that I'd get in soon, as my wife and I work different shifts, and have different weekends (mine consisting of Tuesdays and Wednesdays). What I might not have said, was that I totaled my Burgman 650 last April, breaking my back and two ribs, and that my wife was pretty insistent on keeping me off motorcycles until next spring. (Just how is that done, anyway?) I had already disappointed her a couple of weeks ago by driving the 140 or so round-trip miles (@ $3+/gal.) just to see the shop. Yesterday morning, I just couldn't contain myself anymore, and filled up the DR350 (which I could use pocket money to do, as it gets around 70 mpg), and took off once more to Mt. V. I had put on my armored gear, but since it's cold weather gear, and quite warm out, I came back and took it off after a quick ride around the block. (Heh) The weather was terrific, and since I hadn't ridden since April 27, all was right with the world. After nearly 70 miles, I saw the entry to Dale's and turned in - almost. It seems that the week previously, the cambered turn, in the middle of which is the drive into the lot, was graveled. Let's see, crossing off camber on a graveled (seemingly paved??) road. Marbles. Not good. Low speed low side. Hamburger. Unfun. I was very quickly attended to by several nice folks at the shop, and a wonderful lady (who gave me her card, which I misplaced on my return to the shop, and therefore can't mention by name ) accompanied me through the shop, bleeding profusely, and administered first aid. She then drove me to the E-room at Good Sam Hosp. where I proceeded to work up some really expensive care (twelve stitches in my left forearm, both palms bandaged, left knee/lower leg bandaged, multiple abraisions on my left chest/abdomen). My wife can't stop laughing. She has ensured that all our friends - indeed, everyone we meet - get's every sordid detail. Church was very entertaining this morning. Anyway, before we left for the hospital, I managed to toss a leg over the Uly (being very careful not to contaminate same with manifold biohazardous fluids), and determined that the low seat option won't be necessary. The bride insists that I won't preride until I'm ready to buy - sometime around March. Ain't she a sweetheart! Kudos to Dale's. They still have the DR (which won't start and needs a few parts, uhm, refreshed ). I'll pick it up as soon as possible, guys. Oh, in light of the lady's broken ankle the week before, and this little incident, I might recommend a broom brigade, or at least a warning sign. Uh. Dale? Are you listening? Steve Gear up! Glad to hear that you are on the mend. If your wife thought the stitches were expensive, just wait for the psychiatrist's bill. You will be haunted by the Ulysses all winter. It will drive you crazy!!! I predict total insanity by February. The only way to save yourself is to bring the check book with you when you pick up the the wreck. Wifey says if I even look at the checkbook when I go to pick it up, the funeral bill will likely be much less than that psych bill. (What's it cost to be buried alive these days?) Steve Gear up! |

Yeah I always had good luck with Dale's in Mt Vernon. Seems like there was a whole new parts department staff since the last time I was there. Regardless...they stocked turning lights and such. DAve |

Wasions, Checked with Uncle Guido re: being buried alive. To my surprise, the cost is quite reasonable. The basic package is $11,000 less than the Ulysses'MSRP. The deluxe package, which includes custom site selection and re-seeding, is $10,500 less than Uly MSRP. If you call before Columbus day he will throw in a video of the event (VHS or DVD of course). Have wifey PM me if she wants to make arrangements. |

LOL I too "almost" test-rode a Uly. Thursday a friend mentioned that Beartooth HD had a new Uly and was prepping it for demo. Cool, I thinks, I'll be in Billings Friday afternoon for other business, we'll just sneak over and do the test-ride. Wrong. I show up at Beartooth HD around 4:30 in the afternoon and the sales guy says, "you're too late, the first guy we let ride it this morning took it home." Damn, that was quick. Rob |

I found a friend willing to drive me back to the shop to pick up the DR. Told him I'd fill up his truck (!) and buy him lunch. We arrived around noon. Closed Monday's! Steve Gear up! |

Rek, you must be another Montana rider. I'm 150 miles out here in Miles City, so Beartooth is my 'local' dealer. Sorry to hear about missing the Uly, but did they have any Lightning Longs on the floor? |

No, I don't think so. Other than an recent afternoon doing stucco work at the ex-in-law's farm a few miles west of there, I haven't been to Glendive in quite a while. Thanks for the update though. |
