I hear a few people wanting to remove the front fender and replace it with something more sporty.
One thing to note is the headlight assembly pivots at the top for adjustment and the adjustment is held in place by a single bolt through a slotted hole in the fender. The bolt goes through the fender accessable from the underside of the fender. The fender is only a half fender that mounts to the bottom triple tree. I think you will need to fabricate a bracket to replace the fender that will accomodate adjusting the headlight assembly.
You will also lose the rock guards for the fork tubes because the lower rear part of the front fender mounts to them.
Seems like a lot of unnecessary work to me just to change the look but to each his own.
I happen to like the setup myself. Shows more of the tire and is easy to clean.

Steve,
Thanks for the heads up on this. I'm planning to put a lightning front fender on mine. I've ordered the headlight support bracket from the XB12Ss to compensate for this. I'm planning to use this bike as a sport tourer and don't expect any prolonged off road use. If that changes I still have the stock set up.

Oh brother, where art thou? If you can, post a few pictures of the U with the front fender transplant.
I don't plan to ride my new $12K bike through any
rivers or mud pits and might copy your set up.

Javadog,
You will have to wait a few weeks for a picture. I have a thing about early production runs so I passed on the first black one delivered. Mine will be here in a couple of weeks. My bags and the fender are in and will pick them up this week. I'm waiting for the low seat and the headlight bracket. I will post a pic ASAP.

Bro-
Are you going to use the front fender from the XB12Ss as well? If you are happy with the fit, look
and results post the part numbers with the pictures.
One of the XB9s has a color scheme called Kick Ash
that looks sharp. I'll be going after a similar look
as yours, probably with a dark tinted larger windscreen when one becomes available. Good luck.
Oh, I almost forgot. If I am not totally and permanently out of money by the time I get around to it I am going to get the gold tinted exhaust
header pipe ceramic coated. There is a satin black finish that is supposed to withstand 2000 degrees. It turns flat with time. Sweet.

J,
I believe that all of the XB lightning front fenders are the same. I'm holding off on considering the taller windshield until I get some miles on the bike. Both articles in the last issue in Cycle World commented about the "clean air" (no buffeting) over the Ulysses windshield. It will be getting cool here in the next month or so and that might hasten that decision. I like the tint idea. Also, I am considering taping the headers. The look is growing on me and I like the idea of keeping some of that heat away from my ankles.

Taping the headers, that's a good idea. Can I use duct tape? I think I still have some black duct tape out in the garage.

Java,
I think this stuff will work a smige better than duct tape.

So do you wrap the pipe with the gauze bandage and then spray it with the spray paint or what?
Can I do it on the kitchen table? Do I have to bake anything in the oven?

Kitchen table will be fine. Just choose a color that will go with dinner!
BTW I found another front fender challenge. The triple tree for the Uly does not carry the same part number as the Ss. The bracket that I referred to earlier bolts into a hole in the center of the front of the Ss tree. I don't know if that hole exists on the Uly tree. Worst case is I will have to drill and tap one. No biggy.

I would really like to put an Uly fender on my S3. If anyone takes theirs off maybe they'd consider selling it to me?

Did anyone ever post pics of this fender conversion? I've been considering this myself but would really like to see it before spending the coin. Thanks.
