Not a totally specific Uly post, but I am getting one in a few weeks and with the two power points in place ,I will be getting myself a radar detector.

Any recommendations for a good detector , I will be doing the bulk of my riding in the Northeast if that has any bearing on recommendations.

I believe that NJ has started to deploy instant on laser , which I don't think any detector can catch in time.

I have already purchased the Ram mounts, power cord, and earplug (until I get a wireless system for warning) for a Escort X50 that I will be purchasing in the next week or so. I have wanted an Escort for a while and I have about 4 friends that have them. They say it is the best, by far, radar detector they have ever used. NO comparison with any other. I am hardwiring the power supply cord.

Is the Escort now beating out the Valentine 1?

I've found the Valentine 1 directional arrows to be extremely useful. Is it worth the extra $100 and the more involved MC installation? To me - yes. To you - ??

Valentine would get my vote.

All of the tests I have read over the last year have the Escort beating the V-1. I would think since they are so close that it would come down to personal preference. I have not used a V-1 but I have seen my friends' X50 in action. Very impressive.

Henrik,

I have looked at the information on the V1, do you rely on the sound or the arrows / LED signs when you are riding

I've actually mostly used the V1 when driving with friends to track days. In that case sound will alert you, and the arrows will indicate the direction of the radar.

I've ridden a friends bike with the V1, and he had it rigged for sound in the helmet. On the bike you'll mostly use the sound. Using the arrows - safely that is : ) - will greatly depend on how/where you mount the detector itself. Using their "concealed" display in combination with their cigarette lighter power plug would be great on the Uly with the outlet up front. You'd still need their separate audio out box.

That's the big downside to the V1. There is apparently no room for a headphone plug in the V1 case itself, so you'll need the separate audio box. If you're good with wiring it should be possible to get it all rigged nicely, otherwise it can be a bit much with all the separate parts and telephone cord wiring.

Of course, the adventuresome with a good handle on electronics and soldering could probably rig something. V1 is aware of the audio plug shortcoming, and are willing to share wiring information for those who are willing to do some tinkering. My thinking is, that if you could fit an earphone plug in the concealed display ... *and* get the audio information routed - that would be quite ideal.
