I put 30 miles on an XB12X last saturday.

First impressions were that the bike is very tall. Once running, I noticed that it is very quiet. That rattly exhaust pipe valve doesn't even rattle any more.
Once under way, I noticed that the riding position is more upright than my Lightning. The seat is firm and wide. This bike shifts very nicely. I wish my Lightning shifted as well.
Out on the road, the longer travel suspension results in a very plush ride. I found it ironic that this "dirt bike" was more comfy than my Lightning. I think I could do some long miles on the Uly.

I was going to start a similar thread about my test ride on the Uly. I took it out friday for a nice ride thanks to Racine, HD.

The bike handles very well, and shifts as cleanly as any Japanese bike I've ridden. In fact it does everything that it was advertised to do very well. The seat is huge and roomy. It's comfortable with a riding position that would allow you to ride off several tanks of gas without needing to break for anything else. The engine has plenty of power and is deceptively smooth. Yeah, it's tall but I was suprised by how little this effected me while riding, in fact the bike handled and leaned so cleanly that I never felt anywhere near uncomfortable in a turn.

But there is one problem.... IT DOSEN'T FEEL ANYTHING LIKE A SPORTBIKE!!! It's not a replacement for the S3T as Erik stated, it's a totally different animal that is capable of some of the same tricks. It never tempts you to find a great set of twisties and roll the throttle a little harder each time you come to them. In fact it's kind of boring, a great bike to catcha few ZZzzz's on.

I love the feel and ergo's on my S3T and I want the power and reliability of the new XB platform. I don't think Buell is ever going to give me that mix and to put it mildly I'm heartbroken. I was actually depressed when I was leaving the dealership because I was so excited by this bike prior to riding it and so let down after doing so.

Maybe I should buy a XB12Ss and modify it? Maybe I should just settle on a Firebolt and forgo the long distance comfort. I could always keep my S3T and modify it, but eventually engine and tranny will go and I'll have more into the bike than it's worth.

For now all I can say is....

JT

Have hope Impulse, I've got over 150,000 miles on one of my S2's. I've gone through the motor once, and am quite pleased with the outcome. Total investment in the 10 years I've owned the bike is 15,000.00 and 10,000.00 of that was the initial purchase of the bike back in '95.
Your s3T will last for a long time, enjoy it. You can always get one of those XB longs and bolt an S3 fairing to it.

It is amazing to me that two people can ride the same bike and have such different opinions........I guess it's just human nature. I have owned my Uly since Thursday and today was the first day that I could get her to the twisties........I can't possibly imagine what more you could want out of bike. This thing sucks up anything you throw at at it and at the same time you are comfortable. I railed on her all day long and she never once dissapointed me. All of this and I had three HUGE hard bags attatched. My opinion was exactly the opposite of yours..........I kept marvelling at how they could make the bike ride/handle so much like a sportbike.

Bart,
Steve Mackay and I had a long talk last night and I think I'm going to be doing some major work to my S3T this winter. By the time I'm done with it, I have no worries that it will last a long time and perform exactly as I want it to.

Duck,
Remember that I didn't slag the Uly on it's performance. I hope that Buell sells a billion of them and that all of their owners are as happy as you are with yours. (Congrats on the new bike, B.T.W.) While it handles great and is very confidence inspiring, it is not inspiring in any other way to me. Certainly not like my S3 is.

I remember when I first bought the M2 in 2002. I was so inspired I had to have it. Now that I have driven the Uly for a few hundred kilometers I can't even imagine jumping on an M2 ever again. Don't get me wrong the M2 was and is a great machine just feels so dated now with the new bike here. I would take anybody on an M2 on any road and they would have to eat my dust. Because the Uly really can rock.

How about ROSSI on a M2, or HAYDEN or ............
You probably get the point by now, dusting ones opponents is more "rider ability" than motorcycle ability. I've seen some tubers flying through the Gap and..........................

Impulse:
Sounds like you need a 12Ss..and figure out how to add the bags to it, and the S3 fairing like Bartimus said.
Duck:
How did you get an X so soon? PA dealers I have checked with don't expect their first one (all said black) until the second half of September.

Yesterday I got to test ride a Uly! Erik Well since I'm only 5'2" it was as a passenger. That bike ROCKS! I rode with Dave so of course we had to do some curb jumping. I was bacing myself for a crash landing and it only felt like a little dip in the road. Very comfortable. There is sooo much room. Since I ride my own bike I'm used to "my own space". On the Uly you get "your own space". More room than his Electra Glide and more comfortable. I didn't feel cramped like a pretzel like I do riding on the back of a Firebolt. Dave always says he can't even tell I'm on the back when I ride with him, I couldn't even tell he was up front. I was like a queen on her throne. I could actually see stuff, not just the back of his helmet. It's definitely a bike to make room in the garage for. (hint hint Dave) I'd find excuses to get it out, Dave you're almost out of Diet Pepsi can we take the Uly? Let's go to Starbucks, can we take the Uly? We need a few groceries can we take Uly?.... If anyone's wife needs some convincing have them call me.

There's a real one in Cedar Falls. Waterloo has one in Barnes & Noble and Target. I also have my own machine, beans and a selection of flavored syrups so I think you are safe. What do you think I'm drinking right now??!!

Ferris,
There is also one on the way to/from Appleton, which you can't avoid on the way up there with Kandie and her mom.

Dave,
Do you have a demo I might be able to take for a spin this weekend?

"More room than his Electra Glide and more comfortable. "

Daves,
You will have one available at least for test sitting, right?

"If anyone's wife needs some convincing have them call me."

Kandie,
You will be there on Saturday, right?

: )

ps, did the one you sat on have the bags on back? And if so how was it to get up on? The RoadKings with floorboards on back make it easy for the passenger to climb up on, just wondering how the Uly is to negotiate.

Hmmm, rear floorboards on a Uly, nah, if I did that I'd probably be shot.

ps, while we're on the subject, do you have any flip-front full-face helmets in size large that can be flipped open with just one hand? I thought Harley had one branded/spec'd, don't think it was Buell branded/spec'd.
(oops, sorry, wrong place to ask this)

WOW!!!! I just got back from a Uly ride!!!! Um where do I start.. The dealer here just got a black one, I stopped to get oil and filter for my 9R, and 45 minutes before they closed they handed me the keys! I quickly saddled up. It is tall, I'm 5'10" and had on my Oakley boots that have a tall sole, still on my toes. But having ridden tall dirt bikes for years NO problem. The clutch is SMOOTH, shifting- SMOOTH, I did several "warm up" circles and stops in the parking lot at the dealer to get used to the Uly. Then off into the countryside. First 2 lane roads, mostly tar/chip but smooth. Some ripples, etc. the Uly is very confidence inspiring especially after getting off of my 9R. The longer wheelbase is not as quick and the seat is comfy. Wind protection- as good as my Road Glide with the short windshield. Actually the leg protection is better as my Glide doesn't have lowers. Too much$$ for them. Upper body protection is good, a tall windshield would be great for cooler weather/rain. Ok after about 5 miles I slow down and start going in and out the ditches, no problem, feels like a big dirt bike. I then know some farmers nearby and ride to their land and get on a bean field access road, I ride this on my CRF 230 and it is a dirtbike so it really is a dirt trail. Again the Uly feels like a big dirt bike, very predictable and stable. I turn around, that is a the only thing that was hard, the turning radius is wide so had to stop, dismount and push the bike a little. Left the trail and returned to a highway that lead to the interstate, got on the on ramp, right up to speed, about 70, no problem. Followed a semi about the same buffeting as the Glide. Got off the interstate, went back to the dealer with the biggest grin I have had in a long time. I WANT a Uly!! GREAT JOB BUELL!!!!
( I gotta have one, do I get rid of the 9R or the Glide?)

The 9S or the Road Glide.

Rkc- I mentioned getting rid of my 05 Glide and the dealer reacted with their eyes buggin out. You want trade a H-D for a Buell?
A question for all here, has anyone had a Uly on a track yet? I'm curious cause I like a occasional track day or school. I'm not a racer but it sure is fun on the track. Any thoughts?? Opinions??
