Another Badwebber flew into Appleton this morning to pick up his new ULY and ride it back to Maryland.
In a week or so Don is leaving on a 2 month 16,000 mile trip on it!
Man am I jealous!

What's the fuel capacity on the Uly? Is it the same as the XBs?

No fair! No fair! No fair! I'm trying hard to be financially responsible and put siding on the house, pay down debt, save for retirement, yada, yada, yada. I just got myself talked out of buying one. And then this pic was posted. Oh well, back to salivating.

Nice bike, Dan. Real nice bike. I really like it with that luggage. Have a good trip and enjoy.

This bike is KILLING me!!!

I am also trying to pay down debt, do the right thing, have two small kids...but the Uly has a hold on me.

Never thought I would have a bike with THAT motor in it.

I saw one in person for the first time monday at mcguires in northern cal. looks cool. have not ridden one yet.....I will definitely need the short saddle.....tip toes, if I weave from one side to the other.....

one thing I noticed. You sit right over the front forks, it seems to me....on my m2 and s2 you are behind the tank and the screen, fairing...ON the uly, I am almost looking right down the forks...will take some getting used to...will need to ride and see how it rides...

front forks, and its size really looks cool..rex

I like the bags too. One thing I don't like about the X1 is having to bungee on luggage just to ride to and from work. So either a Uly, or an Electra Glide..........

see that is the delema i am having too.. I would love a Firebolt, but i would like the larger frame and the hard saddle bags w/ it.. oh idea for next year .. ERIK TAKE HEED...

lol but i may get the Uly when the X1 is all said and done, either that or i REALLY REALLY DIG the Night Rod.. that way i can keep the X1 for lone rides, and the Rod for 2 up.. but the Uly would be cheaper all around.. DANG IT I HATE DECISIONS.... when i got the X1, that was it.. no other choices were even there.. that i liked that is...

My first question when I saw that photo was.....who is that ugly SOB standing next to Dave??? Damn. That's me.

Oh well.......Dave picked me up at the airport, set up my suspension, gave me the grand tour and generally went out of his way to help me get on the road quickly. Thanks much Dave. What a great shop!? If more dealers were like Appleton, Buell would have no worries.

The Uly was great. Very comfortable over a long 670 mile ride to Pittsburgh. The seat is fantastic. I am very happy with the bike and can't wait to get in the mountains on my way to Maryland this weekend. This bike is going to be a joy on my two month (yes...I know I'm lucky) ride.

Thanks again to DaveS and Appleton Buell

just a heads up - the Uly's back tire starts making a really wierd noise when the air is really low. before that its gonna feel a little squirly in turns (kinda like the front wants to dive into the turn).

I got a flat yesterday in my rear tire and had no clue until it started making this really strange high-pitched siren kinda sound.

have fun on your trip - bring a few good tire kits - the 2 days I didnt have one in my pack and I got 2 flats. what are the odds : (

my apologies daves, I forgot I made an appointment for service : ( this last week has been pretty crazy for me.

I didnt get my Uly till Thursday, which to my surprise is almost a good month before I "thought" i was getting it - tx to tony and the guys at Liberty.

anyway I did the breakin overnight and brought it back to liberty friday morning for service.

I'm leaving for CA monday - I was going to stop in and say hello but I'll be leaving monday instead of sunday evening, and I think you will be closed as I pass WI. hopefully on the way back.

Now THIS is a story!

I am thinking about doing that when I pick mine up. Take delivery at 2:00PM and schedule the 1,000 mile service for 2:00PM the following day!

I've gotten several e-mails from folks who have done cross county gigs on Ulysses and the reports are all awesome.

Congratulations and ride safe!

thanks court!

I left Liberty 2 or 3 pm? not exactly sure. I followed the sun west along all the twisties I could find (you don't have to look very far in PA) and did the most religious break in routine I'd ever done in my life.

In addition to what the owner's manual recommends, Odinbueller recommended that I work in at least 3 warmup/cool down cycles, which I did. The first i think was already done as the bike had a few miles on it when I got it. I stopped for an hour after hitting 50, for about an hour at around 200, then about 1and a half hours at around 700

I cycled through all the gears on the back roads of PA, and while not the safest riding technique, I had one eye on the road and one on the tach/speedo at all times. 1st and 2nd got only mild workouts in PA, 3,4 got most of the work out with some 5th. every once in a while I would hop on the freeway and do quick rolls up and down the gears. If any body was on PA freeways and was annoyed by a Ulysses speeding up then slowing down then speeding up, etc. my apologies.

after the sun went down I started just following signs east. I ended up near Albany as my odometer was rolling on 500. At about 480+ I took a nice break and read more of the owner's manual. I chatted with a nice fellow in a gas station - his son has a harley he told me all about it. I hit 500 somewhere around 2-3 am.

after 500 i started working the gears in increasingly higher rpms. from 500-600 miles I worked 3-4-5 in the 3-4k range. from 600-700 I worked up higher past 4k

at around 700 miles I went home, checked email, took a shower, changed my underwear, had a bite to eat and went back out. My fiance was giving me the look of death but the mood I was in, it just made my grin wider

approaching 700 miles, I circled brooklyn, then manhattan, and made my way onto the NJ turnpike

after I hit 800 I pretty much beat on the bike a bit getting 3-4-5 up to 6 k briefly.

the last thing I did before I got my rear flat was some high speed runs, but making sure they were brief and that rpms did not go above 6k. I hit 120 briefly and the Uly couldve gone faster but I dont want to push too far past 6k until after i put in a few thousand more miles. If i hadn't been riding the thing for 17+ hours I doubt I would have pushed it that far even.

everyone talks about wheelies. no offense but wheelies on the street are useless I never wheelie in public :P. real skill comes in when you're not on asphalt and need to loft your front for one reason or another. after I get my low seat and put a few thousand more miles on her, I'll take her offroad and start slidding the back wheel around and popping the front up : D

all i have to say is this bike is fun to ride, if anyone disagrees there is a blue and white '03 gsxr 1000 for sale at Liberty harley/buell - just call tony I'm sure he'll cut you a sweet deal : D

Small tangent, if its alright..

I noticed the reference to Modesto. Would that be Modesto, CA?

I was (unfortunately) born and raised in Motown, and know that what is now Modesto Ducati on Carpenter Ave, used to be Modesto Buell.

Would someone be so kind as to relay the quick story of what happened there? Thanks much.

It's amazing the number of things that are already happening on the Ulysses. . . folks buying them and riding them home across the country, taking them straight from the showroom to the swamp ad infinitum

Anyway . . . while you were working I was on a Buell mission. Sure, I logged 17 hours yesterday, but stole a bit of time for a Buell assignment.

Well the story of Modesto Buell would be best told from the owner, Danny but since he is not here. Modesto was probably the best Buell dealer and shop on the planet. They went far and beyond anyone else in taking care of their customers. One story is of a guy taking in his tranny from his S1 because it was damaged. The tech looks at it and tells him it is under warranty and if he will wait they will rebuild it, they had all the parts in stock. Rebuild your tranmission while you wait! They finally gave up the brand because Buell corp was giving them so much greif over things like warranty on wheels. The rear wheel on the tubers would fail. Modesto warrentied so many wheels that the company accused Deanna (parts princess) of stealing wheels! You gotta wonder about the message the company is sending when they discard the best dealership on the planet. Tho Daves now has that title. I am 1500 miles away from Modesto and I did business with them. They always had the part in stock and Deanna always had a answer for me. The highest compliment I can pay them is this, if they had been my servicing dealer, I would still have a Buell. I gotta tell you this story. The ignition switch on my 1998 S1W was going bad, my local dealer tried for three months to get me another one and could not. Finally they said, we can't get one, dunno why, maybe you can find one somewhere else. I called Modesto. Yep, got one in stock. I will send it to you, if it fixes your problem send us a check, if not just send it back. Now they are MoDucto, Modesto Ducati.
; )

Is the wheel problem you're referring to the spun bearings in the Marchesini?

Thanks, Budo!

I popped in there this morning and asked about it and got the response that Buell wasn't profitable enough for them. they appear to be doing very well in the Duc business and claim to be the 7th (largest?, in sales volume?) Ducati dealer in the country. Responses like yours and others I've read warm me up to getting a ducati from the hometown dealer, but the Uly is so darn neat, and Livermore is only an hour away.
