Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback on the heat on the right side of my Uly. Speaking with the mechanic he thinks it is the air duct on the left side directing the air to the back cylinder and onto the inside of my upper ankle and calf. A good pair of riding boots should work fine.

Back to the topic. My good friend loves....And I mean LOVES the ULY. He and I ride all the time and thinks it would be great to have one also. The owner of the HD shop has mentioned that he will knock the price down on the demo Uly. It's a black one and has 250+ miles on it. He has 6 ulys already sold on back order. He'd have to wait a very long time to get one (8 weeks plus I think).

I told my friend that I would be concerned because of how the bike has been ridden while not being broken in. He noted this and mentioned something about hitting the rev limiter a few times while riding it. I told him to wait and do some research and I would post here to get all of your thoughts.

So what are your thoughts? Would you buy a demo? Should he be worried about the treatment of the engine before break-in? Should he get an extended warranty if he does get it?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!

If he can afford the extended warranty, used wouldn't be an issue. Buy it, flog it, get it fixed for free. Who knows, with the reliability of these motors, he might be surprised that he wasted his money on the EW, but it is always piece of mind knowing you have it.

My 03 XB9S was a demo and it certainly wasn't flogged before I got it. Haven't had any problems with it either. Saved some $$ too!

My X1 was a demo. It wasn't broken in properly.
It always consumed a bit of oil.
I would suggest waiting for a NEW new bike.

I tried 3 demonstrators before I got my Buell. All the demos ran and sounded like a bag of chisels but were faster.
I console myself with thought that mine'll cruise past 20k (gulp) while the demos have grenaded at 10

I bought a XB9S 2003, demo.
Had 250 miles on it.
8000 miles later, it is still doing fine:-)
If I had the chance of getting a deal on one now, or waiting 6 months and no discount, I think I would do the former.
You get the new guarantee on the demo, so you are not taking a big risk.

"..My 03 XB9S was a demo and it certainly wasn't flogged..."

I think that is hopeful denial. Its like buying a rental car, you have no idea of how it was driven, only the total mileage. But if no damage was done, the saving can be great.

I could not be a dealer, I just couldn't stand to watch people go out of sight on a new bike knowing what some of them plan to do with it.

It would be very interesting to plant a GPS data logger in the tail housing on a demo and look at the tracks later. You could see the speeds and track data with that.

//rant on
It should be mandatory for anyone that has a newly licensed driver on their insurance policy (i.e., parents for the most part) to have a GPS data logger in the car, to download and review the data daily, and to make it available to a driver license academic review board with authority to suspend or cancel licenses.

This is not about punishing teenagers, it is about keeping them and other members of the public alive and undamaged.

There shouldnt be anything wrong with buying the demo.

The Factory and people and general are waaaay to cautious when it comes to break in periods for their bike. You do NOT have to keep it below blah blah blah, or go less than XX. The best motors ive ever had I broke in hard.

The whole point of breaking in a motor is to get the rings to seat, and seat well against the cylinder. The best way to do that is flog the living hell out of. The only thing I do recommend is to vary the RPMs while doing so.

Bottom line, there is nothing that could have been done to that bike in 250 miles, that wouldnt show up in the warranty period.

I have ridden and sold lots of Buell demo bikes in the past and have yet to have any problems with them.

Of course you and your friend could always make a trip to Wisconsin to get a new one!
I have 2 left that are not spoken for coming in.

Just called my friend. A couple of questions for you Dave...

How orange is the Barricade Orange? Our dealer here says that it is traffic cone orange.

When will your bikes be in? He is seriously considering flying to WI to purchase one and ride it back to the west coast.

Is your friend a photographer? I was at Downtown HD Sunday and they told me the demo has been sold to a photographer.

I have had an orange one on order since Monday after the announcement and it won't be in until September. Sunday was the first time I've seen the Uly in person -- glad I ordered when I did.

"Traffic Cone Orange" Could be cool!

My '03 XB9S was a demo and had 350 miles on it. I sure it was flogged especially since the race kit was already on it. It has 18,000 miles and runs great, no oil consumption. If I was currently in the market and could a afford a Uly I would buy the demo.

My 03 XB9R was a demo with 156 miles on it. HOWEVER...the dealer also had service records showing the oil changes every 6 months or so in both the engine and primary with the mileage. Each time the mileage was about 50 or so and since the price was right I figured I would go for it.

It is a risk but if given the choice I would go for a brand new out of the crate bike if possible. I have bought used before but usually I went for a low price bike and rebuilt it since the total cost would still be less than new and I know what I have from the start.

Update on the demo Uly. They are offering him $700 off (basically freight, setup and a little bit more). He is wondering if it's a good deal on a 200 mile Black Uly. I told him to go for it. It's cheaper than mine.

What do you guys think?

If he likes the bike I'd use the $700 for hard bags and BUY IT.

I wouldn't sweating buying a Buell demo. When you consider all the chaperone's along on the typical demo rides, there is no way they are getting abused.
