I have been into three different shops here in the NW and have seen the new Ulysses. After talking with the sale clowns, I always ask about the luggage.
Long story short: The bags are on backorder - we don't know when they are coming in.
I've asked two other people on another board about this and was completely ignored.
So I'm asking the question here:
Is Buell pulling off another screw up?
If I were to buy the Ulysses and have to wait for the bags, how could I plan any vacations, etc.?
ps. Don't try to put the blame on the dealers. I view it the bikes should've been shipped
with the luggage.

Not sure if this is the concrete reason, but I did read here, in a Uly write up, that when the manufacturer of the luggage system provided BMC with the final product, BMC wasn't please with the seals on the luggage, or the system wasn't up to buells expectations. (Not sure if it was the seals or just the quality overall) But this caused a set back in the delivery of the luggage system as BMC didn't want sub-par bags and such being delivered, as this could possibly muster the "Why would they sell cheap luggage"

Again this is what I remember reading, and so you know, I don't remember that well where I was this time last night

Hang in there, these are growing pains for Buell. A lot of us have been waiting for this day to come, and some dealers are going to need some adjustment time to re-aclimate to a new state of Buell. If there is a backorder on any item, then the release date is always available, however quite changeable. Be patient, the anticipation will reward you. If you have specific questions, I can try to substitute information with tactile interaction. Not everyone wants the bags, and Buell wants to offer them without a compromise on quality. And trust me, these bags are nice. Entirely worth the wait in my opinion.

These are actually not back ordered. Technically they are available, but since these items ship directly from the manufacturer (in Germany), we are told that there is a 30 day lead time for orders on these items. If you have a Ulysses on order, have your dealer order the bags now, and have them install them before you take delivery to take advantage of the 2 year warranty.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Chris

I wasn't aware of any other screw ups. What exactly are you referring to?

Please give us another screw up?

If the quality is not up to Buell Standard then its much easier to wait for the right product than to backpeddle and be frustrated with an inferior product.

Maybe this is a silly question but will the bags / system fit the XB12sS?

No...the tail/subframe is different.

The question is will the Ulysses tail fit on an Ss?

Any idea from those that have looked at it closely (or taken delivery) will the ulysses tail swap to the sS? Anyone out there?

My guess is he's talking about the first time Buell put luggage on a buell S2T & S3T. The stuff looks good but can't hold up to the vibrations and ends up cracking the inner plastic part of the bag. This happens even within weight specifications, though some suggested they were over weight causing the failure.

T9r,
thanks for that answer. YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD. Remember when they were replacing key sets, hinges, etc.? Well I know that these new bags are made by someone other than Buell. I just hope that the new company has had the opportunity to mount these things to an old iron head sportster to properly test them from cracking. If they can hold up under that, then they will work just fine on the Uly.
I can't watch the board all day long like some of you can, so I have to wait until I get home to check up on the answers/comments.

If it makes you feel any better, BMW had the same problem of getting the GS Adventure bags out with the bike when it was introduced.

But yes, I'd be pissed if I ordered a Uly and didnt' find out until I went to pick it up that the bags weren't there yet and they didn't know when they would be in.

Not sure if this is the concrete reason, but I did read here, in a Uly write up, that when the manufacturer of the luggage system provided BMC with the final product, BMC wasn't please with the seals on the luggage, or the system wasn't up to buells expectations.

The bit about them not being up to buell standards was in the cycle world article, so how long ago must it have been for it to be part of the article?

Guys, you're creating a classic no win scenario for Buell.

If they sell you bags that aren't up to snuff, you'll nail them later. If they hold up the bags for QC, you nail them now.

Be realistic. I think Buell is doing the right thing getting the QC issues resolved first!

Good on 'em.

It's not as if other manufacturers don't have similar problems. How long did it take to get the promised hard bags for a Honda VFR?

Regards,

"... Entirely worth the wait in my opinion." Ouch...that brings back some memories from the recalls of '99. While I'm sympathetic to Buell's apparent demands on specs, I hope they can turn this around soon. The Uly seems to be the bike that will demand attention and convert many existing riders. I hope it's just a small bump. The S3 bags...well...at least they don't open up at speed! ANd FWIW...I get some moisture in my Tiger bags.

"...growing pains for Buell." That card shouldn't even be considered anymore in this card game. I believe Buell has hit a home run with this bike and riders that demand a world class bike won't buy into a perceived fledgling company.

I have made an INACCURATE statement. I indicated you might have to wait for the bags for the ULYSSES....nothing could be further from the truth.

16 full sets and 9 sets of side cases were shipped today.

The one caveat is that XB12X bags are being sent, initially, to dealers who actually HAVE Ulyssi in stock.

Buell is working hard to insure you waren't waiting on bags while someone, with bags, is waiting on their Ulysses.

Bags are shipping the same day that orders are received. Who ever thunk you folks would be ordering at such a voracious rate. Obviously, some folks don't need to be convinced.

The remark that Buell may have "pulled off another screw up" could be no further from the truth.

That get the questions answered straight enough? Buell, frankly, is kicking butt.

i second THAT!
it's a wonder
the brand can even get out of
the showroom with
all these knee-jerk
shoot-from-the-hip
the-sky-is-falling-on-buell
nostradamuses typing, furiously, away.
lemme tell ya,
"ricky"
when BMW intro'd the new, non-plunger-framed
/5 series, there was a considerable wait for the 'wixom' bags (made in los angeles).
this was, as well, a quality control issue.
i doubt anyone was calling it another BMW 'screwup', but instead, folks were pleased that their brand was interested in getting the best from their jobbers, and, ultimately, to the customer base.
if you can't wait, try a rucksack. i'll lend you one of my a*l*i*c*es....

Friends I think we need to talk . . . I think many folks have NO IDEA what is happening at Buell and that the very principles that have evolved the reliability of the XB platform have been invoked in EVERY AREA within the company.

You, from the consumer shoreline, are seeing but the tip of the Buellberg. If you'll remind me tomorrow, I'll share an story on my "Home Court Advantage" section about the luggage for the Ulysses that will make your heads spin.

Yes it did.
Now if you would kindly inform the dealers to actually tell people that the bags are coming, I'll bet even more Uly's will sell.
The people on this board, and other boards, know more about Buell than the idiots selling them.
It's a real shame. (about the dealers)

Now, Ricky asked a fair question. As sensitive as some are about having to answer, others of us are just as sensitive about the possibility of having another lovable quirk to deal with right at the point of purchase. Maybe some of us were too excited about the possibilities of a new Buell bagger.
Wait 30 days after order? I'm happy that isn't correct, but to shrug it off as acceptable is simply .... unacceptable.
A wait while the end product is improved is great. Shipping the day an order is received is completely acceptable. I can understand not wanting to have a large of investment in bags at dealers all over the country that may or may not be used.
Yes, other brands have had problems with their bags. Doesn't mean that Buell gets a mulligan because someone else made the same mistake.
We have, in a sense, adopted Buell as our child. Even though the child has made great strides in maturity, some of us are still wary of the possibility of repeating a mistake that caused us much pain in the past.
Court, I can't tell you how reassuring it is to have you contribute to this board. I'd offer to buy you a beer someday, but that is just too trivial in return for what you provide.
Chris, your desire to provide personal assistance is also noteworthy, and certainly part of what will make Buell move forward without questions like this in the future.
Thank you both for your time...
Now get to work on that S3T replacement!!!

Wait'll ya hear the rest of the story. Buell, in addition to making an excellent motorcycle, probably made the bag zinger of all time.

We'll get to the details later. . . starting on 7 days/wk-11 hr/day today. . . gotta go build a powerline. We're working in energized powerlines today which is totally foreign to the folks in NYC...hehehehe...I always get to "lead by example" when it involves touching live lines.

I am in no way knocking the Buell luggage, and am sure it will do everything that they claim. Personally I prefer the look of the Hepco & Becker Gobi range of cases to the Buell ones. They seem to fit better with this type of bike. I am hoping that Hepco will have the fittings available for the XB12X soon for these. As they open from the top rather than the side they should be 100% waterproof too.

I do apologise for the unwarranted and totally obscene BMW pic : )
