I'm curious to know if they improved the gearbox on all of the bikes. I'd love for the shifter on my Buell to be as tight as the wife's CBR.

Will the transmission fit on the older XBs?

If it does, you do realize that you have to split the cases to access the transmission. Probably more work than it's worth.

No not really, all you need is someone who knows how to do it with the right tools standing right behind you.

Might be a good upgrade while boring the cases for a big bire kit?

Boy did I leave myself open on that one! Buelliedan, thanks for not opening fire.

Doughnut, Becki got her license last month after passing MSF. Daves has a low milage 1995 CBR600F3 that has been dropped but repaired nicely. It was pretty cheap and I don't have to worry about her dropping a Buell. We're looking at a different bike in a few years (XB9R) but the CBR is great for now.

Anni,
Thanks for the heads up. Another checkmark in the plus catagory for Buell when I decided to replace my S3T.

Yeah, but...let's think here: if they cost the same, would you want the new Buell tranny, or a Baker 6 speed?

And I'll betcha the Baker is cheaper...

A 6 speed tranny would be nice, but if you think ANYTHING by Baker is going to be cheaper that the same thing from Buell, then you're living in Fantasyland.

>>>then you're living in Fantasyland.

Very reason I dismissed the thread as more entertainment that substanitive.

The "need" for a 6 speed in a Buell is pretty much great bar room conversation and ends there.

I don't know. I think another gear would be great. Let's discuss it over a beer sometime.

I think for a 'touring' bike as the Ulyses claims to be, lack of a 6th gear is a drawback.

I'll have another beer now....

Guys, the Ulysses gets over 60 mpg on the highway! Name a six speed touring bike that equals that.

And so go the spec guys knocking down an incredible bike by checking boxes on their list.

Will the Ulysses do 200MPH?...my friends Hayabusa goes 200MPH and he says it's an important element of a touring bike.

I wanna go 200 too.

Also, is it possible to slather plastic all over this thing? They way it is now, should I immerse the bike in a brushevoir, that's damned little I can harm and precious little for my insurance company to pay for......I like to break things. I like power tools.

Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

No disagreement on the economy of the bike. But I will say that the Buell, as currently configured, is a bit nervous when driven at a sustained 80 mph. My old Duc would do that comfortably (in 6th gear). Not 'checking a spec box', merely stating my opinion on my own view of a shortcoming of the Buell for sustained high speed cruising. YMMV.

That's strange, cuase that is smack in the middle of the sweet zone for my Cyclone. Anywhere from 60 to 100 in 5th gear and the bike just purrs.

To be honest though, I do sometimes reach for 6th gear. Alternative would be to simply go to a different final drive ratio or primary drive ratio to boost overall drive ratio by 5% or so.

I myself would like to travel at 80mph at around 3K rather than 4-4.5K. Bring on the 6th gear. Otherwise this bike is great (XB9SX).

One thing that may not be immediately apparent to some is that an overdrive hurts drivetrain efficiency. The extra path through the countershaft compared to the direct drive 5th gear is the reason.

i have made a few highway trips on my buell (xb9r). one of them was done with solid rain, and a bit of hail, on the trip south. at no time did i ever feel nervous or uncomfortable cruising on the highway. i would say that my average speed was between 80-90. the only thing i didn't like about the trip is going in a straight line for 4.5 hours.

when talking about the number of gears you got to keep in mind that when you change the number of gears your also going to get a change in gear ratio. there not just going to slap on a 6th gear to the end of what you have. you'll end up with the same top speed and just have to shift more often. the reason for needing extra gears is so that engines with a narrow power band can stay within peak power performance. because of our wide power band we can hang in one gear longer than other engines. just like muscle cars or little sporty cars. a big block is only going to have 4 or 5 gears, probably 4 if they are going for acceleration. where a highly tuned sports car will have 6 (or sometimes even 7). because they need that many to stay in the peak of there power band.

i know i'm not a mechanic but i'm sure others can back up what i'm saying.

Like I said, YMMV, as in for others this may not be a big deal (or even an issue at all). But for a long distance bike, I would prefer to have a taller gear to bring the revs down for extended high speed cruising. Buddy of mine has a Sporty and he also wishes for another tall gear for freeway flying. He's been a died-in-the-wool Harley guy all his life, I've ridden almost every brand there is. On the freeway we're both searching for that non-existen 6th gear.

With the bags and an overdrive gear, the Ulysses would be a great bike and I'd be working on how to put one in my garage. But with the current setup it is (to me anyway) a nice bike that I wouldn't be willing to spend my own money on. Again, that's my opinion. Not bashing the bike, just giving my opinion.

Hey Ebear,
I'd take my XB12X TO shell reef in a heartbeat, but I don't think I'll be shooting walls on it any time soon..that's what the XR400 is for.

When you say "all of them" are you including the blast? It looks to me like the blast still gets the old style transmission based on the spec comparo option at buell.com.
