KTM advertises 436.5 LB (no fuel) so with a full 5.8 gallon tank the KTM Adventure 950 should then weigh in at around 475 LBs or so full wet.

The difference between the wet weights of the KTM and the Buell was 12 pounds, if memory serves. I suspect the difference is even less with bags; the KTM bags are heavy things.

Wow, that back end sure looks familiar. I believe Court has the "Sealed E-mail". I believe our group was half correct. Now to wait for the next bike to see if we were right on that one too.

So, has anyone figured out where they squeezed in the extra 0.7 gal. of fuel?

(Looks like a brilliant bike, and obviously a testament to the fundamental goodness of the XB platform. I would need some serious high-heeled sneakers to be able to ride one, however!)

Exhaust looks like it ports out just under the left side under the swingarm.
The foot pegs look to be a stronger S stile that could transfer to the rest of the line which would be good.
Sponsors should expect to gear up for another type of cheese grater eliminator/license relocator.
From what I can read in the picture the writer is upbeat on the bike which is cool!
Be interesting to see what the bags look like.
Not as clean looking as the rest of the XB line but better looking than any other Adventure/Sport I've seen. So far it looks like they did a good job to me and I think it should do well.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahah.

These are going to sell like hotcakes!
I can't wait to ride one.

Blake, you want me to put you on the list for a black one?

Cataract?

In about 4 hours we'll be able to see what else the people in East Troy have come up with.

I think I'm going to be a busy guy.

Blake...not sure if it's mention in the article but the swingarm is 3" longer than the other XB models (at least according to rumors I've heard). The tank/frame is also bigger to hold more fuel: D

From the CW review:
Buell has been working with insurance companies to ensure that the bike's crash-resistance is reflected in reduced rates.

Mozart,
I am a bit confused by the description from CW shared by our own gracious scoop reporter hero Whosyodaddy. That rear portion of the tail section must include some kind of cowling then?

Or... maybe there is another version of the Ulysses?

Two more hours to official www.Buell.com update.

BUELL FIREBOLT DESIGN ENHANCED FOR 2006

New Swingarm and Transmission for the American Sportfighters

EAST TROY, Wis. -- (Sunday, July 24, 2005) The performance of America’s sportfighter motorcycle, the Buell Firebolt, is enhanced for 2006 with the introduction of a new swingarm design and a new, smoother-shifting transmission for both the middleweight Buell Firebolt XB9R and the muscular Buell Firebolt XB12R.

The Buell Firebolt is designed to offer uncompromised sport performance, combining advanced frame and suspension design and the willing power of an American V-Twin engine.

Key Firebolt Upgrades for 2006
(see Buell lead release, New Ulysses and Lightning Long Lead Buell Line for 2006, for more details)

A new transmission features a “dog ring” design for quicker shifts with less effort. New helical gears reduce transmission noise, and the oil-change interval is extended to 10,000 miles from 5,000 miles. Clutch lever effort has been reduced by 15 percent on the XB9R and by 22 percent on the XB12R. A new drive belt is more durable than the previous belt.
A redesigned swingarm is stiffer and 0.56 pounds lighter than the previous design. The swingarm continues to also function as the oil reservoir, and the oil cap has been relocated and redesigned for easier access and opening. The inner fender and upper and lower belt guards have been restyled.
The engine air intake has been integrated with a wrap-around fuel cap cowling in the airbox cover, replacing the air duct that formerly passed through the frame. This change also enabled increased fuel capacity.
A durable new Goodyear Hibrex 135-tooth final drive belt with Flexten Plus technology requires no scheduled service or replacement.
Performance Through Technology
The Firebolt is designed around the Buell Trilogy of Technology design philosophy: frame rigidity, mass centralization and low unsprung weight. The massive, rigid aluminum frame doubles as a 3.8-gallon fuel cell, which helps lower the center of gravity and centralize mass. For the same reason, engine oil is stored in the aluminum swingarm, and the muffler is located below the engine. The Buell Zero Torsional Load (ZTL) front braking system mounts a single 375mm rotor near the wheel rim, gripped by a six-piston caliper. Braking forces are transmitted directly from the rim to the rotor, so torsional load through the spokes is virtually eliminated. This permits the use of a very lightweight wheel that also helps reduce steering inertia. ZTL and lightweight belt final drive contribute to a significant reduction in unsprung weight.
In many riding conditions, torque and a wide power band are often more functional than peak horsepower. The Buell Thunderstorm V-Twin engine delivers torque by the bucket-load. This 45-degree, air/oil/fan-cooled powertrain is also compact and narrow in profile. Buell DDFI II fuel injection delivers crisp throttle response in any riding situation. The Buell Uniplanar engine mounting system reduces vibration to the rider and enhances rigidity by incorporating the engine as a stressed member of the chassis.

The Firebolt wheelbase is just 52 inches and rake is a radical 21 degrees, with 83mm of trail, an aggressive chassis geometry that’s quick, but never twitchy. A Showa rear shock and 43mm Showa upside-down fork are fully adjustable for pre-load, compression and rebound damping. Low handlebars and rear-set pegs put the rider in a sporting position behind a compact fairing.

Buell Firebolt XB12R
The synthesis of brute power and track-tuned agility, the Firebolt XB12R puts 103 horsepower and 84 ft. lbs. of torque in its rider’s hand. The Buell InterActive Exhaust system utilizes a valve in the dualchamber muffler that is controlled by the ECM and adjusts exhaust flow according to riding conditions to smooth torque delivery and optimize engine power. It is available in Midnight Black, Racing Red or Thrust Blue with stunning Translucent Amber wheels and Graphite Gray frame.

Buell Firebolt XB12R features:
Buell Thunderstorm 1203 fuel-injected air/oil/fan-cooled V-Twin engine
103 peak hp, 84 ft. lbs. peak torque
Buell InterActive Exhaust
New transmission design
New Goodyear Hibrex drive belt with Flexten Plus technology

Buell Firebolt XB9R
The Buell Firebolt XB9R is a frisky middleweight ready to eat up the road. The quick-revving Thunderstorm 984 V-Twin delivers 92 horsepower and 70 ft. lbs. of torque in a smooth, broad powerband for a powerful drive out of the turns. It is available in Sunfire Yellow with Sky White wheels and a Fluid Silver frame.

Buell Firebolt XB9R features:
Buell Thunderstorm 984 fuel-injected air/oil/fan-cooled V-Twin engine

BUELL GETS DIRTY WITH THE NEW ULYSSES XB12X

An Adventure Sportbike Ready for On and Off Pavement

EAST TROY, Wis. -- (Sunday, July 24, 2005) The pavement may end, but the ride continues. For 2006, Buell plays dirty with the Ulysses XB12X, a new adventure sportbike that takes its rider to the end of the road, even if that road is unpaved.

With special Dunlop tires optimized for both street and off-pavement performance and longer-travel suspension, the XB12X is one sport motorcycle that’s not afraid of a little dirt. Under this rugged new profile beats the heart of a Buell with the willing torque of the Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin engine and a chassis tuned to tame the tightest turns.

“If you ride the back roads, there always seems to be a new adventure waiting beyond the pavement,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “I think we’ve built a bike that’s very capable off the pavement, but will perform well on urban roads and rural twisties. The Ulysses XB12X is a motorcycle for any road that takes our core design principles of frame rigidity, low unsprung weight and mass centralization in an entirely new direction.”

A dry weight of just 425 pounds combined with the 103-hp output of a Thunderstorm V-Twin engine gives the Buell Ulysses an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. The engine’s broad power band, with abundant grunt at low rpm, suits the demands of low-speed, off-pavement travel. A new transmission provides smooth, quick shifting and quiet operation.

To enhance control and comfort in all riding conditions, the Ulysses XB12X has a 54-inch wheelbase, which is two inches longer than other XB models. The longer wheelbase, a high, wide handlebar, and neutral footpeg location combine to provide a comfortable riding position. The wide, textured seat is designed for all-day rider and passenger comfort. Handlebar-mounted deflectors and a two-piece windscreen designed to limit buffeting also enhance the ride. The hollow aluminum Ulysses frame doubles as a 4.4-gallon fuel tank. Seat height is 33.1 inches.

The Ulysses is supported by fully adjustable, premium Showa front and rear suspension components with 6.5 inches of front travel and 6.4 inches at the rear. Rear spring preload can be adjusted instantly by turning a dial located just below the left side of the seat.

Ground clearance is 6.75 inches. A dual front fender system provides good debris protection for the rider and the bike. The 17-inch, six-spoke, cast-aluminum wheels are designed for durability. Dunlop D616 tires created specifically for the Ulysses have an aggressive, open tread pattern for excellent performance on paved and unpaved roads.

The touring versatility of the Ulysses is enhanced by the Triple Tail system. The Triple Tail folds through three positions to function as a luggage rack over the rear seat position, as an upright backrest/grab rail for a passenger, or as a luggage rack over the full-coverage license plate bracket. The Ulysses has two 10 amp/12-volt accessory power outlets (one on the dash, another under the seat) and a large under-seat storage compartment. Color-matched side cases and top case will be available for the Ulysses, as well as a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver.

The Buell Trilogy of Technology principles – frame rigidity, mass centralization and low unsprung weight – are applied to great advantage in the Ulysses XB12X design. The lower center of gravity achieved by carrying fuel in the frame, oil in the swingarm, and locating the muffler below the engine makes the Ulysses extremely flickable on paved roads and inspires rider confidence when riding off pavement.

The Buell Ulysses XB12X will be offered with Barricade Orange or Midnight Black bodywork with Graphite Gray frame and swingarm and magnesium-tone wheels.
